Notes: This location was taken over by monks from Tynemouth in the 11th century. In the Middle Ages it was the northern English headquarters for the Knights Templar. Until recently it was thought to have been the site of a large yew lost in the mid 19th century. Further research might one day establish whether the notable yew recorded here was regrowth from the stump of the old yew.
