Notes: Go east from the lanmark of Robin Hood's Stride and search just below Cratcliffe Tor. It is a most atmospheric site with its pair of old yews seemingly guarding the hermit's cave. Though the carvings inside may date from the 13th century, and it is known that somebody lived here in 1549, the trees are almost certainly not of such a vast age. The yew in the photo is the much recorded female, east of the entrance.
