Notes: A late Norman church. It is well documented that George Fox (1624/91), founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers), once preached here beneath 'a great yew tree'. In 1859 John Wilbur wrote that 'at Sedbergh, we saw the Yew- trees, which are yet standing, under which George Fox had a meeting in 1652. One of these trees was dead and dry, but the other has yet a few green branches about it'.
