Notes: The site has been a place of worship since Saxon times. According to this postcard the avenue was planted in 1530. According to The King's England written by Mee, the avenue was planted by the Earl of Arundel in 1544. In A Topographical Dictionary of England, originally published by S Lewis, London, 1848, 'the principal entrance is approached by an avenue of eight yew-trees, remarkable for their size'.
