Notes: In 19th century publications this location was called Withycombe Raleigh. Since there is a church dedicated to St John the Evangelist in the centre of Withycombe Raleigh this has led to confusion with the church of St John in the Wilderness, which is found on the NW west edge of Withycombe Raleigh parish in a village called Withycombe Barton. Since Withcombe Barton is not named on O/S 50000 maps, the location became known as nearby Bystock, which is how it appears in Meredith's Gazetteer (1994), found in The Sacred Yew by Chetan and Brueton. The yew grows south of the church, close to its tower.
