In Arcisse de Caumont’s 1862 Statistique monumental du Calvados, vol 4, he recorded a girth of 4 m 10 cm, but made no mention of the height at which it was measured. In 2018 I recorded as follows: 6.69 m at 50 cm; 6.27 m at 100 cm; 6.21 m at 120 cm; 6.20 m at 140 cm. In 156 years the gain in girth is between 2.10 m and 2.59 m. The yew has a fluted trunk and while it appears solid, some old sapwood showing at the base reveals that there are hollow spaces within. The large girth is retained for a considerable height.
