Bidborough

Tree ID: 285

Yews recorded: Ancient 5m-7m

Tree girth: 607cm

Girth height: at the ground

Tree sex: male

Date of visit: 8-Jul-99

Source of earliest mention: 1936: The King's England - Arthur Mee

Notes:

A complex tree of 3 fragments, some wrapped around portions of the original trunk. It is found at the highest point of the churchyard at the edge of a steep bank. A large portion of the original trunk may be considered unsafe in the future. If removed it will significantly alter the appearance and girth of the tree. When David Counsell recorded the yew in 1992 he noted a completely hollow tree with a girth of 23′ 0” (701cm) at 3′ and 26′ 0” (792cm) at 4′. By the time I measured in 1999, girth was just below 20′ (607cm) around all the fragments at the ground.
