Notes:

The exact site was located by a party of botanists and archaeologists. The largest yew had a girth of 15′ 4” (467cm) at 1′ from the top of the bank and 13′ 10” (422cm) at 4′ does not immediately suggest that it would be the tree described 216 years ago by Gilpin. But closer inspection of the trunk provides enough evidence for us to consider that this was once a much larger girthed yew and might well be Gilpin’s tree. Other fine yews in the vicinity had girths of between 12′ and 13′.
