Burstow

Tree ID: 904

Yews recorded: Ancient 4m-5m

Tree girth: 485cm

Girth height: at 90cm

Tree sex: unspecified

Date of visit: 17-Feb-01

Source of earliest mention: 1880: Paper presented to Croydon Nat. Hist.& Scientific Soc. by E.Straker

Notes:

The yew, which grows SE of the church, is beginning to hollow.
1880 – Straker recorded a girth of 13′ 6” at 5′.
2001 – Tim Hills: I measured it to be 14′ 10” (452cm) between the ground and 1′ and 15′ 11” (485cm) at 3′. A comparative measurement at 5′ would have been inappropriate since branches pull outwards and the tape would need to pass over the remnant of a former stem. The tree has 2 main growth areas, the base of one of which is hollow. The limb preventing the 5′ measurement was dead.
