Tree ID: 3006
Yews recorded: Notable
Tree girth: 200cm
Girth height: at 60cm
Tree sex: female
Date of visit: 9-May-09
Source of earliest mention: 1819: The New British Traveller - James Dugdale
Notes:May 2009 – Tim Hills: This extraordinary sight was well documented in the early 19th century. All accounts agree that one of the trees (first two photos) bears the date 1704 as the date when they first ‘assumed this fictitious shape’. If this is the case then the yews would perhaps have been planted between 50 and 100 years earlier, giving them present ages of 350/400 years. The right side topiaried yew (photos 3 to 5) now bears the date 1990. Both topiaried yews have identical girths of 6′ 7” at 2′, while the unclipped tree growing to their right (last two photos) and almost certainly planted at the same time, now measures 8′ at 2′.
