Notes:

The yew recorded below is known as the Lovers’ Tree or Giant Yew. According to the guide book it is estimated to be between 600 and 1000 years old, and certainly pre-dates the present castle. The yew is found below an Elizabethen or earlier terrace with stone steps aligned with the yew. Also of note is ancient yew topiary in the Old Dutch Garden, and several specimens beyond the Knot Garden, with girths of 15′ 6”, 12′, 11′ 6” and about 10′.
