Yews recorded: Lost
Tree girth: 427cm
Girth height: at 90cm
Tree sex: unspecified
Date of visit: 28-Jan-06
Source of earliest mention: 2006 Russell Cleaver
Notes:January 2006 – Russell Cleaver: Heavily pruned, reduced crown, large old scars. Impacted soil and beside tarmac drive. Foliage good colour. No sign of recent regrowth.
Summer/Autumn 2006 – Yew felled. A Picus Tomagraphic Ultrasound survey shows decay voids in the centre of the trunk. Felling has been recommended because the criterion for safety is that the remaining undecayed part of the trunk should have a thickness greater than a third of the radius of the trunk. Using that as a basis would lead to the felling of giants like the Brockenhurst Yew, whose radius of 105cm consists of 10/15cm of wood with the remainder hollow space.
