Notes:An article in The Gardener’s Chronicle of 30th May 1874 described this lost yew as ‘the largest yew referred to by any English writer, said to have been 81 feet in girth’. This figure has been arrived at by misreading its girth of 27 feet as 27 yards. 27×3=81. It was nevertheless a substantial tree.
