Marston Bigot

Tree ID: 591

Yews recorded: Ancient 7m+

Tree girth: 922cm

Girth height: at 30cm

Tree sex: unspecified

Date of visit: 1-Dec-97

Source of earliest mention: 1791: Collinson/Rack - History of Somerset

Notes:

1791 Rev J.Collinson – A History of Somerset: Described as ‘A fine old yew with a girth of 23′ (701cm) at 4′.’
1946 Vaughan Cornish – The Churchyard Yew and Immortality: Cornish had requested information about yews from the Diocese of Bath and Wells. What he received from them was the list of yews and their measurements that had been published in 1791. He was not aware that this information was out of date and published it as current information. The tree has thus been mistakenly described as ‘An old yew with a girth of 23” in 1946.
1997 – Tim Hills: The bole was covered in twiggy growth, with only the first foot visible. Just below the twiggy growth I recorded a girth of 30′ 3” (922cm). An increase of 7′ in 200 years seems altogether reasonable.
2024 – Brynley Andrews: A female yew with a stem girth at 120cm (on the north, highest land side) was 984cm (32’ 3”), the average of three measurements.
