Notes:In The History of Morley of 1874 by Norrisson Scatcherd is the following: ‘There seems to be no doubt that the Christian Clergy preached at these Crosses before Churches were erected, and afterwards, upon the consecration of a Church, it seems to have been the custom to erect a Cross in the centre of the Church-yard, or to plant a Yew Tree, or, perhaps, to do both. Indeed, it was by seeing an ancient Yew Tree in the Burial-ground of Old White Chapel, that Archbishop Sharp knew it to be consecrated ground.’ The yew is long gone.
