Tree ID: 1268
Yews recorded: Ancient 4m-5m
Tree girth: 452cm
Girth height: at 15cm
Tree sex: female
Date of visit: 22-Nov-04
Source of earliest mention: 1876: Littlebury's Directory and Gazetteer of Herefordshire, 1876-7Transcription by Rosemary Lockie © 2002
Notes:November 2004 – Tim Hills: The 1876 record notes an ‘elder-tree growing out of it’. If the pieces of stump next to the tree are from that elder, and the yew once surrounded it, then the tree’s girth would have once been in excess of 22′. On this occasion I recorded 14′ 10” (452cm) between ground and 1′.
Revisiting in November 2006 to take photographs, the tree was so ivy covered that the trunk was completely hidden. Ivy also appears in the topmost branches.
