Notes:Yew tree A is at SO52108781. The mudstone beneath the standing section of this tree/s looks extremely precarious and I sensed that it is only a matter of time before this collapses. This possibility is highlighted by the visible sinking of the ground level on the field side. The section of tree which has already collapsed into the Dean (on the right in the first two photographs) is an unknown quantity. Was it once a part of the standing tree that has fallen and separated, or have these always been two trees growing in close proximity whose roots and other material have merged? The standing tree was measured at the root crown and a girth of 16′ 4” (498cm) was recorded. The collapsed tree I would estimate to be at least 10 – 20% larger.
So are these two individual ancient trees, or fragments of a once formidable tree?
