Yews recorded: Ancient 7m+
Tree girth: 914cm
Girth height: at the ground
Tree sex: female
Date of visit: 10-Jun-99
Source of earliest mention: 1849: A Topographical Dictionary of Wales
Notes:Berta Ruck, in her autobiography called A trickle of Welsh Blood, wrote ‘THE YEW TREE, and one must use capital letters because it is so vast, so old, and so revered. One of its big branches has taken root on its own and produced a subsidiary tree. Now that has become an arbor in itself’. The same family owned the property at the time of my visit. Lowe recorded a girth of 30′ at the ground in 1897.
In 1999 I was unable to make a thorough examination of the yew but observed two major branches from a bole of about 5′ growing to an estimated height of 45/50′. Also the fallen branch that had produced the ‘subsidiary tree’. Closer observation may reveal that yews growing up to 30′ away may be offspring of this parent tree.
