Tree ID: 2064
Yews recorded: Lost
Tree girth: 792cm
Girth height: No data
Tree sex: male
Date of visit: 14-Sep-05
Source of earliest mention: 2002: Andy McGeeney
Notes:A famous tree, reputed to have provided the inspiration for the nursery rhyme ‘Rock-a-bye-baby’. It would seem that this tree, still alive in 1920, has suffered extensive fire damage, other acts of vandalism and souvenir hunting. Girth estimated as 26′.
By 2025 the yew remains have been given an element of protection behind a fence. From one of the ‘dead’ fragments there are some new shoots. While it is possible that these have grown from seeds deposited by birds in the decaying material, is it also possible that the old yew lives on?
