October 1998 – Tim Hills: Bole hidden behind a circular stone wall about 18″ high, on top of which a structure of wood embedded in concrete is angled towards the trunk. The entire structure moved following storms in the 1980s and had to be renewed. At the same time a tree surgeon removed much of what was considered to be surplus height.
Church records from 1743 and 1867 mention specific work done to the yew. In 1743 ‘shoring up’ the yew tree included the ‘carriage of stones and sand for yew tree’, costing 2s 6d.
In 1867 Mr Carpenter was paid 2 pounds 18s 4d for ‘stone for the yew tree’.
