Paul Wood: Tree A at NGR SO67388307 is male. Its bole is about 10′ in height on the north side of the hedgerow it grows in and about 7′ on the south side of the hedge on the higher ground. The bole is used as an animal back scratcher on this side and is clear of any growth. The north side has much twiggy growth. The tree is hollow on its eastern side at the top of the bole. Foliage is plentiful but not a complete covering, with many dead branches interspersed in the canopy and crown. Girth was estimated as about 20′, based on being able to measure a section on the south side as 9′ 7” at 2′ from the ground. I was also aware that there appeared to be a lost section on the north side of the tree, suggesting that this yew has been larger still. Lower branches have been removed regularly and the tree is not a typical shape.
