Tree ID: 5223

Yews recorded: Ancient 4m-5m

Tree girth: 414cm

Girth height: at 100cm

Tree sex: female

Date of visit: 24/10/2017

Source of earliest mention: Paul Wood

Notes:

The unusually tall yew is the only survivor of three that once grew here. The fragmented remains of one of the lost yews can still be seen, east of the surviving tree, while the one that grew near the south end of the house is gone. The living yew was measured at 1m and a girth of 13′ 7” (4.14m) was recorded over a thin covering of ivy on the north side of the tree. Its short bole of about 2m breaks into two very straight uprights to a height of about 15’/20′. The side of the tree free of ivy displays gnarly bumps and twiggy growth. There are also signs, between the two uprights at the top of the bole, of the yew starting to hollow .
