Tree ID: 1008
Yews recorded: Notable
Tree girth: 363cm
Girth height: at 30cm
Tree sex: male
Date of visit: 9-Feb-01
Source of earliest mention: 1946: The Churchyard Yew and Immortality-Cornish
Notes:A male yew with a girth of 11′ 11” (363cm) at 1′. Sizeable branches have been removed from it, one at a height of 5′ facing the church, and another which would have grown towards the river. The cuts were long enough ago for new wood to be laid down around the cut branches. Above a height of 10′ is much branching.
Vaughan Cornish (1946) was given information about a yew with a girth of 17′ 9” growing here. Two gentlemen who had always lived in the area assured me that there was no other yew that once grew here. Nor was there a yew at the now disused St Mary’s church in the upper part of Tintern.
